Sotto ended his turno en contra speech against the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill Wednesday, netizens have floated the possibility that portions of his speech have been lifted from another work. This comes after Sotto’s staff admitted that his Aug. 15 speech included portions copied from an article by US-based blogger Sarah Pope. Netizens said Sotto may have committed the same blunder, this time translating parts of a 1966 speech of then US Senator Robert Kennedy without attribution. Filipino Freethinkers, the same RH advocacy group which first accused Sotto of plagiarism, posted a photo on Facebook comparing Sotto’s speech to that delivered by Kennedy at the University of Capetown in South Africa in June 6, 1966. Yahoo! Southeast Asia posts the same comparison below: Kennedy’s speech: “Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation.” Kennedy’s speech: “It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped.” Kennedy’s speech: “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”
